INFORMATION UPDATE April/May 2008 Number 93 Welcome to INFORMATION UPDATE, the monthly resource for information seekers and users. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ IN THIS ISSUE ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ => DO IT YOURSELF - Going Green ************************************************************* DO IT YOURSELF - Going Green: Web Sites of Interest ************************************************************* No doubt you've noticed all of the emphasis these days on going green. In general this means finding ways to tread lightly on planet Earth, using no more resources than neces- sary and whenever possible leaving things cleaner than you found them. Going Green is really pretty easy, and hopefully the follow- ing Web site suggestions will make it even easier. TreeHugger http://www.treehugger.com is a very cool site, with an abundance of information to help you get informed on matters green. The site also offers forums for interaction plus guides and job boards for taking action. My favorite part of the site, however, is the Green Gift Guide. They suggest gifts for the geek like the Earthtech Solar Laptop Charger. There's the Recycled Cashmere Dog Sweater for the animal lover and Nellie's Dryer Balls that reduce dryer time and help eliminate the need for fabric softener. GreenDimes at http://www.greendimes.com This is the one- stop-shop for getting your household off the junk mail lists. For a mere $20, the GreenDimes people will handle all of the paperwork required to get your name off of key junk mail lists as well as catalog lists. They have over 114,000 satisfied users, and I confess that I'm one of them. National Geographic has a buying guide called The Green Guide http://www.thegreenguide.com. The site also includes a Tip of the Week for going green gradually and a CO2 calculator to determine your impact on carbon dioxide emissions. Apparently my household can reduce CO2 emissions by 928 pounds per year with a 5 minute cut in shower time. DoItYourself.com http://doityourself.com provides Going Green tips on topics for your home (interior and exterior), health, food, pets, special events, and autos. This also one place to go for info on how to build a straw bale house! For more Web sites on Going Green try this nifty guide put together by the librarians at the Middletown Thrall Library, Middletown NY http://www.thrall.org/special/goinggreen.html ************************************************************* Shamel Information Services Web Site ************************************************************* The Shamel Information Services Web site at http://shamelinfo.com contains Information Update archives.
