INFORMATION UPDATE January 2008 Number 90 Welcome to INFORMATION UPDATE, the monthly resource for information seekers and users. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ IN THIS ISSUE ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ => DO IT YOURSELF Part 1 – Skweezer.net => DO IT YOURSELF Part 2 - Set Browser Preferences to Show More Results => Subscribe/Unsubscribe Information ************************************************************ DO IT YOURSELF Part 1 - Skweezer.net ************************************************************ If you count yourself among the 10 million or so people who go online using a cell phone or PDA, you will want to know about Skweezer. Skweezer offers reformatted Web sites so that the image will fit into a cell phone or PDA screen. Here's how it works. Simply go to http://www.skweezer.net and type your Web address or keywords into the Skweezer search box. Try something like amazon.com to go to a known site, or search keywords like "san diego restaurants" for a list of options. "Skweezer compresses and reformats content being downloaded, so that it loads faster, looks better, and is easier to navigate." (Skweezer About Us section) Skweezer has compiled a Directory of recommended Web sites, including headings for Business, Dictionaries, CoolAndFun, Entertainment, News, Reference, Travel, and Weather among others. You can also set preferences. Click on Settings to turn images on or off, elect whether to split Web pages, and to change language. Language choices include German, English, Spanish, French, Italian, Japanese, and Portugese. If you decide to try Skweezer, let us know how it works for you. ************************************************************* DO IT YOURSELF Part 2 - Set Browser Preferences to Show More Results ************************************************************* No doubt you've noticed that most Internet browsers deliver search results in sets of ten. To see additional results you go to the next page or screen, viewing ten results at a time. This most likely stems from the earlier days of Internet search when users had slow connections and results took longer to download. Now, with broadband and high speeds, searchers can save time by downloading larger results sets at the outset rather than viewing only 10 at a time. Most browsers will let you change this default setting. With Google click on Preferences and choose to display 10, 20, 30, 50, or 100 results at a time. With Ask.com click on Options to change Display Settings. For Live.com you also click on Options, but the maximum setting is 50 hits. Firefox users can install CustomizeGoogle and choose to stream Google results. The CustomizeGoogle application will automatically load the next set of results and append them to the bottom of the page. This is an amazing time saver over the option of manually loading page after page of search results. http://www.customizegoogle.com/ ************************************************************* Notes, News, and Announcements ************************************************************* Last month's Information Update carried an article about Authoratory.com. This tool assists users in identifying experts or thought leaders based on their publications indexed in PubMed. According to the site, use is free for educational non-commercial and government use. In response to a reader request we have contacted the Authoratory creator to inquire about commercial use. Here is a portion of their reply: "All commercial users are encouraged to try Authoratory for a week or two. As a part of the trial you have full access to all Authoratory content." Following the trial period, commercial users are offered an opportunity to purchase a subscription.
