INFORMATION UPDATE October 2007 Number 87 Welcome to INFORMATION UPDATE, a monthly resource for information seekers and users. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ IN THIS ISSUE ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ => Do It Yourself – Random Research Recommendations => Did You Know – Copyright Compliance Matters => Subscribe/Unsubscribe Information ************************************************************ DO IT YOURSELF – Random Research Recommendations ************************************************************ Over the past month I have had the opportunity to coach a novice business searcher. Here are a few of the tips we covered. For recommended sources of business information, try a business library Web site, like the Harvard Business School Baker Library. http://www.library.hbs.edu/ Notice the nifty list of Research Guides. Business schools are also a good source for case studies. Harvard is probably the best known for its case studies, but it's not the only source. The Stanford Business School has a diverse list, as does About.com for Business Majors. Harvard - http://harvardbusinessonline.hbsp.harvard.edu Stanford - https://gsbapps.stanford.edu/cases/ About.com - http://digbig.com/4tshr For full text articles, try Google Scholar or FindArticles. http://scholar.google.com/schhp?hl=en&tab=ws http://findarticles.com/ When combining terms in PubMed http://www.pubmed.gov, always place the connectors in all caps. Use AND, OR, NOT rather than and, or, not. Trust me, this *will* affect your search results, especially if your search includes MeSH terms or any other field tag like [ti] or [au]. Remember, for the most part the open Internet will only offer what a company wants you to find. For competitive intelligence and more powerful search options, contact an information professional or Shamel Information Services for a consultation. ************************************************************* DID YOU KNOW - Copyright Compliance Matters ************************************************************* Legg Mason, a leading global asset management company, subscribed to the Lowrys' Reports stock analysis newsletter for years. Legg Mason employees posted that newsletter on the corporate intranet and faxed it out for all to share. When Lowry learned of this practice they gave notice that this kind of redistribution was in violation of copyright laws. Legg Mason chose to continue circulating the newsletter. The resulting lawsuit ended in a finding against Legg Mason for willful copyright infringement and a $20 million jury verdict. A survey of corporate knowledge workers found that 70% needed to share information with co-workers or business associates. Only 6% reported obtaining permission to republish or reprint copyright content. 24% assumed someone else in the organization was taking care of it. 40% said they "have not thought much about it." http://www.djreprints.com/other/copyright.html Copyright compliance awareness is the reponsibility of management.
