INFORMATION UPDATE September 2007 Number 86 Welcome to INFORMATION UPDATE, a monthly resource for information seekers and users. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ IN THIS ISSUE ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ => Do It Yourself - Scitopia => Did You Know - Results from Literature Searches Can Be Uploaded into Bibliographic Software => Subscribe/Unsubscribe Information ************************************************************ DO IT YOURSELF - Scitopia ************************************************************ In previous issues of Information Update we've talked about science and technology research tools. One example is Scirus http://www.scirus.com the science specific search engine. Scitopia http://www.scitopia.org is a new resource for your research tool box. Fifteen leading science and technology societies including the American Geophysical Union, American Society of Civil Engineers, IEEE - Institute of Electrical and Electronics, and SPIE have joined to create a federated vertical search portal. Through this portal searchers will access over 3 million documents published by these societies over the last 150 years. Scitopia is a free service funded by the participating societies and powered by a technology developed to search the deep or invisible web. Results will not include the full text of articles, but it will lead to options for obtaining the full text. When you select the articles of interest, you are directed to the Web site of the appropriate society. If you have a personal or institutional subscription, you will be able to access the full text. Otherwise, you will have a pay-per-view option. Prices vary. Note that Scitopia focuses on the physical sciences rather than the life sciences, so keep this resource in mind when you want to search the engineering, optical, electronic, or physics literature. ************************************************************* DID YOU KNOW - Results from Literature Searches Can Be Uploaded into Bibliographic Software ************************************************************* If all goes according to plan, a literature search will yield a list of articles or documents of interest. Bibliographic software makes it possible to manage these references so that they can be stored, sorted, annotated, cited, or formatting as a bibliography. Examples of such software include EndNote, Reference Manager, and ProCite. Most of us do not have the time or inclination to manually enter references one by one into the bibliographic database, so I'm happy to report that there is an easier way. Search results from commercial database providers such as Dialog can be formatted for output so that with a few clicks of the mouse they can be uploaded into the software of your choice. Using the powerful search tools offered by Dialog, it's possible to search across multiple databases (Medline, Embase, and BIOSIS for instance), download the results, and upload them into the bibliographic database. It takes no more time to enter 500 references than it does to enter five.
