INFORMATION UPDATE June 2007 Number 84 Welcome to INFORMATION UPDATE, a monthly resource for information seekers and users. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ IN THIS ISSUE ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ => Do It Yourself - PopURLs.com => Did You Know - Copyright Compliance 101 => Notes, News and Announcements => Subscribe/Unsubscribe Information ************************************************************ DO IT YOURSELF - PopURLs.com ************************************************************ Try to summarize the latest and the greatest from the Web on one page and you have PopURLs.com - http://popurls.com/ PopURLs says "popurls is the dashboard for the latest web- buzz, a single page that encapsulates up-to-the-minute headlines from the most popular sites on the internet." I learned about PopURLs in a recent conference session, and as presenter Mary Ellen Bates warns, this site is a "dangerous time sink!" Nevertheless, give it a go. PopURLs will lead you to the what's happening on many of the most popular sites on the Web including del.icio.us, flickr.com, newsvine.com, youtube.com, wired.com, slashdot.org, boingboing.net, odeo.com (millions of free MP3s), furl.net, and lots more. Launched in March 2006 by Thomas Marban, PopURLs offers a grand tour of what's popular on the Web today. The site gets over 40,000 hits per day, so join the crowd and have fun! ************************************************************* DID YOU KNOW - Copyright Compliance 101 ************************************************************* Folklore: "I'm using this for research, so copyrights don't apply." "I have a subscription, so it's OK to email copies to my co- workers." "Since I'm only sharing a couple of tables and graphs from this journal, I don't have to worry about copyrights." "It's freely available on the Internet, so I can distribute it without concern for copyright violations." Facts: Copyright laws protect the intellectual property of authors. Anyone wishing to reproduce, distribute, or display the work must have permission of the copyright owner. The concept of "fair use" which can sometimes permit use without permission, rarely applies in corporate or for-profit organizations. Mere ownership of a work does not give the possessor rights to copy or distribute. The quantity of the work to be shared does not necessarily result in an exemption from copyright laws. An excerpt or a selected table or graph may constitute the heart of the work and the most valued part of the intellectual property. Copyright protection subsists from the time the work is created in a fixed form. That form can include print, sound, digital (online), film, and architectural works. It should be assumed that any work of authorship is covered by the laws of copyright. Good news: Copyright laws protect the intellectual property of all authors, but this doesn't mean you can't share works within your company or among co-workers. There are tools, methods, and practices that permit the flow if information that companies need to succeed.
