INFORMATION UPDATE April 2007 Number 82 Welcome to INFORMATION UPDATE, a monthly resource for information seekers and users. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ IN THIS ISSUE ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ => Do It Yourself - Shorten Those Unwieldy URLs => Notes, News and Announcements => Subscribe/Unsubscribe Information ************************************************************ DO IT YOURSELF - Shorten Those Unwieldy URLs ************************************************************ Have you ever tried to send a Web link to a colleague or friend by pasting the URL into an e-mail? When it wraps at the end of a line it's no longer a "hot" link and clicking on it leads nowhere. Maybe you've tried to include URLs in a spreadsheet along with other, related information in order to deliver a neat, tidy package of information to a client or coworker. Inserting a lengthy URL into the cell of a spreadsheet can really mess up the formatting. Not to worry. There at least two solutions, and both are free. Visit the following Web sites for all of the details. DigBig http://www.digbig.com Tinyurl http://www.tinyurl.com These services will create a short little URL that you can cut, paste, share, and save. DigBig and TinyURL will store these links for you indefinitely, so they will work now and into the foreseeable future. Here's an example. The business librarians in the American Library Association have a nifty site with the Best of the Best Business Web Sites. Here's the URL - http://www.ala.org/ala/rusa/rusaourassoc/rusasections/brass/ brassprotools/bestofthebestbus/bestbestbusiness.htm Here's the shortened URL from DigBig http://digbig.com/4sskw The original URL was 111 characters long. The shortened version is 23 characters. The easiest way to use these tools is to drag the link to your toolbar. If you don't know how to do this, there are instructions at each site. Then when you need to shorten a URL, just click the link on your browser's toolbar and voila. DigBig requires registration and is only available to use for work related purposes. Neither DigBig nor TinyURL can be used for spamming or illegal purposes. ************************************************************* Notes, News, and Announcements ************************************************************* >>Information Seekers may now subscribe to Information Update using the web form at http://shamelinfo.com.
