INFORMATION UPDATE August 2006 Number 76 Welcome to INFORMATION UPDATE, a monthly resource for information seekers and users. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ IN THIS ISSUE ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ => Do It Yourself - Search Using Multiple Search Engines => Notes, News and Announcements => Subscribe/Unsubscribe Information ************************************************************ DO IT YOURSELF - Search Using Multiple Search Engines ************************************************************ Experienced Web searchers agree. For the best Internet search results, use more than one search engine. That seems like sound advice. Now which search engines should we use? There are lots to choose from, ranging from the all-purpose (like Google) to the subject specific (like Scirus for scientific information only). In this issue of Information Update we'll list some all-purpose search engines and save the subject specific ones for next time. These are widely used, tried and true search tools. Bookmark or put them in your toolbar for easy access: Google http://www.google.com Yahoo! http://www.yahoo.com MSN http://www.msn.com/ Ask.com http://www.ask.com Google continues to stand out as the most popular. It is heavily used and well respected. Yahoo! offers an excellent web search engine. It also has the directory feature so that you can browse for your topic under pre- defined categories. MSN represents Microsoft's presence on the web. The search engine is good and free Hotmail has been a big draw since Mircrosoft bought them in 1998. Ask, formerly Ask Jeeves, uses proprietary search relevancy technology obtained in 2001 by purchasing Teoma. The binoculars icon lets you preview a page without downloading it. There are some tools called meta search engines that will search across multiple search engine databases all at the same time. Use these with caution, however, since they do not search as deeply as each individual search engine used alone. Popular meta search engines include: Dogpile searches Google, Yahoo!, MSN, Ask, About, and more. Dogpile will remove duplicates. http://www.dogpile.com Cacti also searches Google, Yahoo!, MSN, and Ask. Cacti ranks the results by relevancy. http://www.cactisearch.com/ Happy Searching! ************************************************************* Notes, News, and Announcements ************************************************************* Shamel Information Services wishes all Information Update readers a great summer! >>Information Seekers may now subscribe to Information Update using the web form at http://shamelinfo.com.
