INFORMATION UPDATE May 2006 Number 74 Welcome to INFORMATION UPDATE, a monthly resource for information seekers and users. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ IN THIS ISSUE ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ => Do It Yourself - It's Not What You Know, It's Who You Know => Notes, News and Announcements => Subscribe/Unsubscribe Information ************************************************************ DO IT YOURSELF - It's Not What You Know, It's Who You Know ************************************************************ Surely you've heard this old adage before. It ranks right up there with, "eighty percent of success is showing up" attributed to Woody Allen. There some great ways to expand the circle of "who you know" and to find out more about "who knows whom." ZoomInfo: The search engine for discovering people, companies, and relationships http://www.zoominfo.com/Search/. With ZoomInfo you can use the Basic search capability to Find people and companies. Search your own last name to see how this works. Register with ZoomInfo to enable e-mailing or to create a ZoomInfo Web Summary of your findings. If you open an account with ZoomInfo, you can "Find Employees by Company," "Find Alumni by University," or "Find People Mentioned in a Specific Website." You can get a one-week trial for $19.99. ZoomInfo also offers the opportunity to "BeFound." Registered users can create a ZoomInfo presence that helps you be found. Individual profiles can be set up to give contact information, employment, board memberships, education, certifications, and biographical information. They Rule is a very cool tool for visualizing corporate boards and the relationship between one board and another http://www.theyrule.net. According to the web site, They Rule focuses on the boards of some of the most powerful U.S. companies that share many of the same directors. The data was gathered in 2004, so currency may be an issue. Nevertheless, the maps showing corporate directors are a useful starting place for company research. For instance, begining with a search on Microsoft, we find out that board member Raymond Gilmartin also serves on the board for General Mills and Merck. That puts Gilmartin squarely in the know for three powerful industries. Jigsaw http://jigsaw.com offers a blend of the social net- working we talked about in last month's Information Update and the business networking of this issue. Jigsaw is all about business contacts, where "marketers, recruiters, and sales people can buy, sell and trade business contact infor- mation." Jigsaw aims to map every business organization on the planet, contact by contact. I suspect that there is more than one organization that has discouraged/forbidden its members from adding information to the Jigsaw database. That wouldn't necessarily stop others from adding them. For every contact a member adds, he/she gets two in return. At this writing Jigsaw has 1,971 entries for Boeing out of a total of 159,000 employees. Lockheed has 1,785 of 130,000. Still, if one of those happens to be the employee you're looking for, the database has value. Happy Searching! ************************************************************* Notes, News, and Announcements ************************************************************* New on the Shamel Information Services web site - "Who Ya Gonna Call?
