INFORMATION UPDATE February 2006 Number 71 Welcome to INFORMATION UPDATE, a monthly resource for information seekers and users. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ IN THIS ISSUE ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ => Do It Yourself - A9.com - The Yellow Pages => Did You Know? - Searching the SEC Filings => Notes, News and Announcements => Subscribe/Unsubscribe Information ************************************************************ DO IT YOURSELF - A9.com - The Yellow Pages ************************************************************ A9.com isn't the only search engine with the ability to link the results to a specific geographic location. However, since we've been looking at A9.com's capabilities over the last few months, we'll continue on that theme this month. When using A9.com to search the Web, you can select the kind of results you want to see by ticking little boxes at the top of the search page. Today I'm looking for golf information. To find golf courses in my neck of the woods, I ticked the box next to Yellow Pages. When you do that a second search box appears labeled Near. So, in the Search box I entered 'golf courses' and in the Near box I entered my Zip Code. Voila! The Yellow Pages show five courses within 5 miles of me. Each listing includes an address, phone number, and links to the course web site and map. At the bottom of the list are radio buttons to indi- cate how far out to search, so if I ask for a 10 mile radius I get 18 courses. Out of curiosity, I checked the box next to Images to see what kinds of pictures I might get. Another column appeared with the image results, but they do not relate to the Yellow Page results. Rather than pictures of the golf courses in my area, they are an assortment of images from all over the world. Interestingly, if you mouse over the pictures you can read the URL and get an idea of what the picture might be. One image turned out to be from a Web site showing pictures of many of the golf courses in my list. Placing the mouse over the image and interpreting the URL is a good way get some information you can use to decide if you want to click on the image and go to its source. Happy Searching! ************************************************************ DID YOU KNOW? - Searching the SEC Filings ************************************************************ Corporate filings to the Security and Exchange Commission contain a wealth of information about public companies in the U.S. From the SEC web site you can search by company name, state, SIC code, and ticker symbol. You can also limit to recent filings. A more powerful search tool permits full text searching of the entire database of electronic filings. In these value added databases you can search the text of the filing for product names, individuals names, and any other text words of interest. Products offering this capability include LiveEdgar http://www.gsionline.com/ and 10kWizard http://www.10kwizard.com. When researching a company, a market, an industry, a product, or a host of other business questions, the SEC filings are one of the many sources that should be explored. To make the most of the electronic data, it is important to have full text search capability.
