INFORMATION UPDATE October 2005 Number 67 Welcome to INFORMATION UPDATE, a monthly resource for information seekers and users. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ IN THIS ISSUE ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ => Do It Yourself - Health Statistics => Did You Know? - Information Moves In, Out, and Through => Notes, News and Announcements => Subscribe/Unsubscribe Information ************************************************************ DO IT YOURSELF - Health Statistics ************************************************************ Everyone everywhere has a stake in health. Preserving good health and delivering health care is of universal concern. It is no surprise, therefore, that health related statistics are gathered and shared by a wide range of organizations and associations. In the U.S. the primary source for health statistics is the National Center for Health Statistics within the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/ Right now I'm working on research related to AIDS, so by checking FASTSTATS A to Z I find that in 2003 there were 44,232 new cases of AIDS diagnosed in the U.S. with 14,095 deaths in 2002. For international health statistics, the World Health Organization heads the list. For WHO Statistical Informa- tion System (WHOIS) go to http://www3.who.int/whosis/menu.cfm This WHO resource includes statistics by disease or condition. Relating to AIDS, the WHO site includes country by country information on the 3 x 5 Initiative, which calls for treating 3 million people by 2005. For more statistical information on AIDS, the WHO site refers to the United Nations UNAIDS organization. The UNAIDS site http://www.unaids.org/en/ tells us that there are nearly 40 million people globally living with HIV. In 2004 3 million people died from AIDS and 5 million people acquired HIV. The UN site also includes specific life expectancy and infant mortality statistics for over 200 countries in one table. http://unstats.un.org/unsd/demographic/products/socind/health.htm Other sources for health statistics: MedlinePlus http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/healthstatistics.html State Health Facts Online http://www.statehealthfacts.kff.org/ Medical Associations and Foundations such as - AIDS.org http://www.aids.org/index.html American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology http://www.aaaai.org/ Cystic Fibrosis Foundation http://www.cff.org Heart American Heart Association http://www.americanheart.org/ For more associations and organizations, refer to: Yahoo Directory http://dir.yahoo.com/Health/Diseases_and_Conditions/ and click on Organizations MedlinePlus Organizations http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/otherresources.html ************************************************************ DID YOU KNOW? - Information Moves In, Out, and Through ************************************************************ Information moves into your organization, it moves out, and it moves through or around your organization. Do you know where it comes from, where it goes, how much it costs, and who's using it? Within many companies there is a minimal understanding of the flow of information, and with that comes risk. There is the risk of not having the information you need when you need it. There are hidden costs in the duplicaton of resources. There is employee frustration in not knowing where to turn for answers and access to vital information. Most companies today could benefit from an information audit. This process helps identify where external information comes from, who uses it, what's missing, and where redundancies or opportunities for cost savings may lie. It's time to consider an information audit for your organi- zation.
