INFORMATION UPDATE April 2005 Number 61 Welcome to INFORMATION UPDATE, beginning our 6th year of publication. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ IN THIS ISSUE ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ => Do It Yourself - Statistics, Statistics, Statistics => Did You Know? - Journals Publish Special Issues => Notes, News and Announcements => Subscribe/Unsubscribe Information ************************************************************ DO IT YOURSELF - Statistics, Statistics, Statistics ************************************************************ Governmental organizations excel in generating statistics. Imports, exports, crime, crops, education, economic, employ- ment, disease, and demographics. You name it, and there's a pretty good chance someone in the government has run some numbers. The place to start looking for statistics published by a U.S. governmental agency is "The U.S. Government's Official Web Portal" - Firstgov.gov at http://www.firstgov.gov/ In the menu bar on the left side, under Reference Center, click on Data & Statistics. Voila! Firstgov offers a list of 29 links to government statistics sites. A good place to start is Statistical Abstract of the United States. From there you can link to the 2004-2004 Edition. Stat Abs (as we call it in the biz) is produced by the Census Bureau, so the web address for a direct link is http://www.census.gov/prod/www/statistical-abstract-04.html Look for the searchable index near the bottom of the blue table. Back on the Firstgov Data & Statistics page, The Facts for You link leads to an interesting list of Facts and Figures About Your Community. Topics include Agriculture & Food, Business & Economy, Healthy People, Science & Technology, and Travel & Transporation. It can be a little mind boggling to browse, but the Firstgov Data & Statistics site is a good one to bookmark for future reference. ************************************************************ DID YOU KNOW? - Journals Publish Special Issues ************************************************************ Have you ever noticed how some journals and magazines follow a pattern in publishing? For instance, every year in April Consumer Reports publishes its automobile edition. Other magazines and journals do the same thing. These special issues can be an excellent source of top 10 lists, product reviews, corporate overviews, executive profiles, regulatory updates, industry trends, and much more. Finding these issues might be difficult, were it not for a database service specifically designed for this purpose. This is just one of the many resources and services we have at our disposal to deliver knowledge to our clients.
