INFORMATION UPDATE March 2005 Number 60 Welcome to INFORMATION UPDATE, beginning our 6th year of publiction. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ IN THIS ISSUE ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ => Do It Yourself - This Site Means Business => Did You Know? - Market Research By the Slice => Notes, News and Announcements => Subscribe/Unsubscribe Information ************************************************************ DO IT YOURSELF - This Site Means Business ************************************************************ MeansBusiness is an interest- ing database of business information. The creators of MeansBusiness add value to already published business information by combing through it for the best and most useful information. This is not the full text, nor is it paraphrased or abstracted. The publishers say "We have aggregated more ideas from busi- ness and management books than any other service in the world. All the material in our database is quoted directly from published books." The Concept Extracts from books contain salient and key concepts from each chapter in the book. Concept Suites contain a variety of authors writing on the same topic. You can browse the database by topic, or search by keyword to find material of interest to you. You can also search on author names or words in the title. MeansBusiness has long term contracts with key publishers including Harvard Business School Press, Financial Times/ Prentice Hall, John Wiley & Sons, Oxford University Press, Microsoft Press, and more. The company offers individual 12 month subscriptions, 90 day subscriptions, or pay as you go with a credit card. This looks like a good option for busy executives who need business books at their finger tips. ************************************************************ DID YOU KNOW? - Market Research By the Slice ************************************************************ A client contacted us recently with a plea for search assistance. "I've looked all over the Internet and in our news database, and I just can't find what I need." What did he need? Well, for a specific business segment he sought market size, key players, spending by sector, and much, much more. This is just the kind of information often contained in expensive market research reports, and it is rarely available for free on the Internet. Several market research aggregators collect reports from leading publishers such as Frost & Sullivan, Datamonitor, Theta, PJB, Business Communications Company, and hundreds more. Then, the aggregator divides the report into sections and makes it available by the slice. A "slice" might be a chart, a table, a page, or a chapter. For this client, we found a recent report on the topic at hand. The complete report costs $4,428. We answered most of his questions by acquiring the executive summary, several tables, and a one page section for under $400. Not all reports are available this way, but when they are, it's an extremely cost effective solution.
