INFORMATION UPDATE "Helping Businesses Find the Facts" March, 2002 Number 30 A Monthly Publication of Shamel Information Services mailto:InfoUpdate@shamelinfo.com ============================================================ Welcome to INFORMATION UPDATE, the free monthly newsletter for business and healthcare professionals. For subscription information, refer to notes at the end of this newsletter. ============================================================ ------------------------------------------------------------ IN THIS ISSUE ------------------------------------------------------------ => Do It Yourself - Google => Do It Yourself - PubMed Search Tip => Did You Know? - Information Professionals to the Rescue => Notes, News and Announcements => Subscribe/Unsubscribe Information ------------------------------------------------------------ DO IT YOURSELF - Google http://www.google.com/ ------------------------------------------------------------ OK. I admit it. Google is my favorite Internet search engine. The home page is clean and simple, yet colorful. The search box is front and center. The search results are generally on target. Google will search for graphics, pdf's, news group postings, and cached web pages. Plus, the Google people have a sense of humor. During the Olympics, the little rabbit mascot that Google sometimes adds to the home page, appeared as a ski jumper and a skater, among other things. Now, Google is offering you a search engine in Igpay Atinla. http://www.google.com/intl/xx-piglatin/ I'm not an expert with Pig Latin, so I tried searching on "anguagelay." That would be Pig Latin for "language." Sure enough, I got results in Igpay Atinla, along with an Igpay Atinla search screen. Why am I telling you this? Well, why not? It's fun, it's different, and it's Friday. Go ahead, try it. ------------------------------------------------------------ DO IT YOURSELF - PubMed Searching Tip ------------------------------------------------------------ PubMed is the National Library of Medicine's free database of references to the medical literature. To search go to http://www.pubmed.gov. MEDLINE does not list an author’s full name. Names are listed like this: Last name (space) one or two initials (space) suffix Example: fairbanks d jr Notice that the listing includes no punctuation. If you enter the name: fairbanks d[au] PubMed will retrieve: fairbanks d, fairbanks da, fairbanks db, fairbanks dc To retrieve only - fairbanks d - enclose the author's name in quotes, like this: "fairbanks d"[au] Happy Searching! ------------------------------------------------------------ DID YOU KNOW -- Information Professionals to the Rescue ------------------------------------------------------------ There are as many different information needs as there are needers of information. Many businesses employ information professionals full time, but many do not. In either case, however, there will be times when your business needs help locating the information you need to succeed. Just as you retain the services of a lawyer or an auditor, you should have an information professional to call upon as needed. The Association of Independent Information Professionals has almost 700 members in 21 countries. The membership includes skilled, experienced researchers who can help you locate, analyze, filter, and format information so create knowledge for better business decisions. AIIP operates a referral service which will help match your information need with an experienced professional.
