DO IT YOURSELF - Charitable Giving and Good Causes
As 2008 draws to a close you may well be considering your options for charitable donations. Despite the economic uncertainties of the day there remains a great deal of inter- est in alleviating the suffering of others and bringing aid to those in need.
To better understand your options for where to dedicate your charitable dollar, you may want to do a bit of research. Fortunately there are a couple of helpful charity evaluation sites that can help with this research.
Charity Navigator works to advance efficient and responsive giving by evaluating the financial health of 5,300 charities. Charities are arranged by categories such as education, health, and international so that you can browse by your own area of interest. I tried searching on the keyword "hunger" and filtering on the category "international." By clicking on "Rating" I can sort the list so that the top rated charities come up showing 21 organizations having the four star rating.
GiveWell performs in-depth research on charities to help people accomplish as much good as possible with their donations. They focus on how well programs actually work to help the people they serve. GiveWell has just begun their work, having evaluated 136 charities. This organization bears watching as the list of evaluated charities grows. In the meantime they do post a list of top rated charities on their home page.

DID YOU KNOW? - Milestones
Shamel Information Services published Issue #1 of Information Update in September 1999. The "Do It Yourself" feature of that first newsletter provided Shamel's Seven Tips for Successful Searching. Information Update did not go online until 2001, so if you'd like a copy of those seven tips, e-mail us and we'll send them to you. Disclaimer: nine years ago the Internet was a somewhat different place!
Issue #1 also stated that "According to the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press, nearly half of all Internet users go online at least once every week to get information for their work or job." In August 2008 Pew Internet & American Life Project found that 49% of internet users use search engines on a typical day.
As we wrap up 2008 and our 100th issue of Information Update, we want to thank all of you for your continued interest in learning more about information issues. With your input and feedback we seek to continue providing interesting reading for information seekers and users like you.
